Oddbox Films is a creative partnership between Van Maximilian Calrson and Kirk Palayan. We’re a boutique production company specializing in film production and advertising. Our documentary, Bhopali, about the survivors of the 1984 Union Carbide gas leak, won 7 awards, including Best Documentary at the 2011 Slamdance Film Festival and has been broadcast globally on networks such as HBO International, Discovery Asia, and Russia Today TV. Our trailer work has garnered multiple awards, including a Key Art win, three Promax BDA awards, two Key Art nominations, and one 2010 Best Trailer at E3 Award.

 

Van Maximilian Carlson’s (Max) Bio:

Van Maximilian Carlson is a Los Angeles born director, writer, and editor whose work has garnered numerous awards, including the “Best Documentary” & “Audience Award” at the 2011 Slamdance film festival for “Bhopali,” which has been broadcast in over 20 countries. He made his first film while in elementary school and continued throughout high school, winning the “Best Film” award at the Toronto International Student Film Festival for “Barstow.” His work includes narrative shorts, documentaries, commercials, and he has edited multiple award winning theatrical trailers and promos. His short film, “Ninth November Night,” was short-listed for the Academy Awards and called, “One of the outstanding documentaries of 2004″ by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Kirk Palayan’s Bio:

Kirk Palayan has written and produced several dramatic films. He wrote and produced a short film, LABYRINTH (2000), which was lauded for being “a powerful parable on drug abuse” at the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival. He also helped to write BARSTOW (2003) which was chosen to play at the Toronto International Teen Movie Festival. The “Best Thriller” and “Most Promising Director” awards were given to his short film DISSOCIATIVE (2008) which he wrote and produced. His first feature film, which he also helped to produce, BHOPALI (2011), was recognized by the Slamdance Film Festival as the Best Overall Documentary and Audience Favorite Documentary.

He is part of the Los Angeles King Middle School Gifted Technology Arts Magnet Program and created the 2D/3D Animation program. He has won numerous awards for his animation curriculum and his students have been recognized for their 3D Animation work for over 9 years by the Los Angeles County Office of Education. He also established the Animation & Film Festival – http://www.animationandfilmfestival.com, which is in its 13th year and highlights some of the best work from student filmmakers and animators in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
